When google says they want to ‘organize the world’s information’ they are serious. They really mean ALL the information. They are entering power metering area with their google powermeter software. They want to help you monitor your home electricity usage.
As far the mission statements goes, google’s mission to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” comes uneder what jim collins calls a BHAG (big hiary audacious goal). It is simple but shoots for the stars. But it also has a privacy angle that really concenrs me. If they organize the world’s information they have access to ALL the world’s information. If they succeed in their misson, then they will be the most powerful enitity, including governments, in the universe. Do you want a private entreprise to have so much power? I don’t think so.
While google wants to organize world’s inforamtion, twitter wants to disseminate all your information. It started out as a status update tool, but is now used as a universal messaging/brodcasting system. Twitter wants to be pipe thorugh wich the real time web flows. This is the dynamic (in physics terminology) version of static google. If twitter can succeed in becoming the conduit for all the realtime happenings, then they are a perfect completement to google. I don’t know if twitter can cross the chasm and go main stream, but if google’s and twitter’s missions come true, then they have access to all our information (both realtime and historic). We better watch out!
