Yesterday I attended cinequest film festival held in San Jose. It was the day of the writer and it featured a couple of interesting talks by Hal Ackerman and Richard Walter, co chairs of the esteemed UCLA screenwriting program. In the afternoon, they had a fireside chat with Diablo Cody, the academy award winning screen writer for the movie Juno.
For those of you who don’t know much about Diablo Cody, hers is an amazing story. She was working at an advertising firm proof reading ad copies and was totally bored. So she decided to take up stripping for a while and blogged about it in her pussy ranch blog and her book ‘candy girl: a year in the life of an unlikely stripper’. Some hollywood exec read her blog and suggested that she write a movie. The first script she ever wrote was made into the movie juno and she won an academy award for best original screenplay. She is now writing for a TV show ‘united states of tara’ which is being produced by a guy named steven spielberg.
You can’t write a better script than her story. She took an unusual path that very few people would take and found success and bliss. She never imagined that her blog would lead her to hollywood. That’s what can happen when you follow your passion. She is a very charming personality and a breath of fresh air in the pretentious world of show biz. She was presented the maverick cinequest spirit award. Her story will surely inspire many people to follow their dreams.
