Digital democracy: Finland

This is really smart and really cool. Finland gurantees its citizens the right to broadband access. I understand it is easier to do such a thing if you are a small country. But Finland deserves much kudos. It is the first country to enact such a law. I will bet this will have direct impact on its future GDP growth. This is how leadership looks like in the digital age. How about such a guarantee for the whole world for broadband and mobile network access. I know there is no entity that can do this right now, but how about UN or world bank or UNICEF or UNESCO etc playing such a role?

Kudos to the Finnish government, which has just introduced laws guaranteeing broadband access to every person living in Finland (5.5 million people, give or take).

This is reportedly a first worldwide.

Starting July 2010, every person in Finland will have the right to a one-megabit broadband connection as an intermediate step, says the Ministry of Transport and Communications. By the end of 2015, the legal right will be extended to an impressive 100 Mb broadband connection for everyone.
