Flash for TV

Adobe is announcing a flash version that works on TVs.

Adobe is making a major push to bring its Flash platform to the living room, announcing a version of Flash that’s optimized for televisions, set-top boxes and Blu-ray players at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on Monday.

Flash is already installed on almost every PC, and it’s building a mobile footprint as well (though many handsets are still Flash-less, including iPhones). Making that same platform work in the living room should provide a big boost for web video distribution and web applications on TVs.

Hardware and chip partners for the project include Broadcom, Intel, NXP Semiconductors, Sigma Designs and STMicroelectronics. Others partners are Comcast, Disney Interactive, Netflix, New York Times Co. and Atlantic Records.

This is awesome. This brings web videos much closer to the TVs in the living room.

Flash coming soon to your mobile device?

As you know one of my biggest pet peeves is the lack of flash support on iphone and most other mobile phones. I want to enjoy my favorite flash web apps on my mobile. Currently it takes too much effort on the part of the content publishers to repurpose their video and other content for the mobile devices. Now there is some good news. Adobe is getting aggressive in pushing flash on to the mobile devices.

Flash on iphone

One of my pet peeves against iphone is its lack of flash support. So it can’t play flash web videos unless they are ‘ported’ to iphone. I always wondered if the problem is business related or technical. Now we know the answer.

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, acknowledged that supporting flash on the iphone is a challenge:

“It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating,” Narayen said today in a Bloomberg Television interview from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver.”

I hope they deliver soon.
